Chapter Two

“So that’s it. You’re pretty much up to speed on all things new and exciting in my life.” Sophie wandered over to her shop door and turned the ‘closed’ sign to ‘open’. “I’m glad I collided with him at the restaurant and also glad I got in his car on Saturday night.”

“Holy fuck!” Jen shook her head. “This is wild. It’s right out of Pretty Woman, Soph.”

Sophie gasped. “Well, hardly! First of all, I’m not a prostitute, thank you very much. Nor am I twenty-five anymore.”

“Fifty Shades, maybe?” Jen waggled an eyebrow. “Is he kinky? I must say, you have a gleam in your eye that wasn’t there last week.”

“Not telling.” Sophie smiled. Embarrassed by it, she’d never confessed her supposed lack of sexual prowess to Jen. “Hey, it’s early days yet. We’re not about to move in together anytime soon.”

“Well, it sure sounds like you’ve got a hook in him. How wealthy is he?”

“Oh, god, Jen, I don’t know! He’s obviously doing okay. I don’t care anyway. It’s not about the money.”

“Only one woman in ten thousand would say that.” Jen grinned. “And I’m not one of ‘em. But seriously, I’m still wrapping my head around all of this. I felt so bad for you on Saturday. You looked so sad when you left. I imagined you sitting at home in the dark, all alone, bawling your eyes out.”

Sophie wrinkled her nose. “Not my style. You should know that.”

“Yeah, so you say. Then again, I’d never have thought you’d be one to accept late night lifts from handsome strangers driving flash cars.”

“Not a total stranger. I tore a strip off him at the club, Jen. Accused him of adultery, when all the time his poor wife died of cancer years ago. I felt terrible. Awful.” She cringed at the memory. “I saw an opportunity to apologize and took it. He offered me a lift home and, well, you know the rest. Actually, turns out my morality rant impressed him.”

“Well, he’s obviously keen since he went to all that trouble for you. Escorted into the Black Orchid on the arm of Hercules The Bouncer. Reserved seating at one of the best booths. Champagne.” Jen blew out a breath. “Penthouse Suite at Prince’s Harbour. Ferrari. Fifty-foot yacht. You deserve all of it, kiddo, and more. But most of all, you deserve a nice guy. One who treats you well. I know how unhappy you were with Steve.”

“Matt Marsden is a nice guy. He treats me very well.” Sophie tilted her head. “But enough about me. Spill, Jen. What happened to you and… what was his name again? Did you dance the night away?”

“Lucas. Lucas Caldwell.” Jen wrinkled her nose. “Not bad in the sack, but otherwise a bit boring. He’s the quintessential company man. Talks about work all the time. Divorced. No kids. Not poverty stricken, either. Swanky exec townhouse in Mississauga. Drives a Lexus. He said he’d call, but I’m not gonna hold my breath.”

Sophie swallowed a smile at
